Sergey Bugaev «Afrika»


(born 1966) is a Russian artist, who lives and works in St. Petersburg. He started his collaboration with the New Artists in 1983, being the youngest member of the group. In 1986, along with Timur Novikov, he founded the Club of Friends of V.V. Mayakovsky. In 1987 he starred as Bananan, the leading character of the famous film "Assa" by Sergei Solovyov. At that time he was also frequently taking part in performances by Sergei Kuryokhin’s Popular Mechanics and a number of well-known Russian rock bands. Starting from 1988 he began working with notable members of the international art scene, including John Cage and Merce Cunningham. In 1999 he represented Russia at the 48th Venice Biennale.
